Say ‘Ish’ to Franken-Fish!

Boy – they are desperate, aren’t they? Now trying so hard to convince us of how ‘safe’ something newly allowed onto the market is. Just how did they come up with such ‘evidence’ so quickly? I cant’ help but wonder. I mean – I’m not a ‘scientist’ – but I have common sense for crap’s sake. Do you want to support producers and purporters of products who insult our intelligence like that? I sure don’t. But my PRIMARY CONCERN is that of my HEALTH and my family’s health. That’s why I feel it’s important to me to share this with you – so you can be as informed as possible and make the best choices for you and yours…

There’s a reason GE goods are so ‘distrusted’ by chefs and consumers…. Because there is conflicting (so called) ‘evidence’… Especially with ill-informed and/ or corrupt ‘experts’ out there!  Remember science isn’t foolproof…. I mean – the Earth was flat once? Planets are planets and then stars and then planets… Hey – it was all science at the time! And so were all of the other things we were intentionally deceived about that eventually came to light – like butter vs margerine,  BPA, Tobacco, artificial sweeteners like aspartame, pesticides, etc. The list goes on and on….

In light of the newly released (FDA-approved – so you see why I don’t trust them either) – GE Salmon now allowed to hit the market – without labels “because it might scare away consumers” (for good reason, mind you) – I have some light to shed on the subject. I’m going to share with you why WE will NOT be consuming GE Salmon – just like we refuse to buy or support anything that may be GMO.

So if you wanna know how I REALLY feel…
Here are my Facebook responses to 2 of the more recent NBC news releases on this subject:

“Look out…. Now fish are being added to the GE agenda. Of course it’s being touted as ‘safe’ by the (oh so trustworthy – um – NOT!) FDA… I know far too much about the inaccuracy of the purported ‘science’ behind GMO’s/ GE foods, and will never put a GE salmon near my family. Many thanks to Whole Foods & Trader Joe’s, among others – who will refuse to sell it. Stick to providers who will ensure your health and safety. *(The fish will not be labeled, of course!) Without our health – what do we have?? If you want to make it a priority – be aware of the newly approved ‘franken-fish’! And, it’s (sadly) only a matter of time before these get loose in the wild and our whole ecosystem is impacted… It’s also only a matter of time until the real evidence starts to leak, and we begin to see the problems associated with consuming these. I don’t want to be their guinea pig. When will the government & big corporations put people before profits?!?
In the meantime, boycott it with your dollars and steer clear! We still hold the power – because we get to choose not to participate. When they lose money – they may reconsider. [It’s their only motivation, after all…]”

“I’m calling bullshit! Sorry – but there’s nothing ‘ethical’ about convincing people to be Big-Ag’s guinea pigs (and probably being paid to do so!) And the oceans aren’t simply being over-fished. There’s way more to it than that. They are being inundated with chemicals – from plastics, and pesticides, etc, etc, etc…. So you know – going back to REAL food production and toxin elimination would be the best bet all the way around – for planet, AND PEOPLE. And, don’t let ANYONE convince you that genetic engineering is the ‘same as’ cross-breeding. It’s not. If those genes can’t be swapped in nature – then they shouldn’t be swapped by over-paid humans either…. That too, it quite unethical…. and so are the blatant lies. Here come the paid-propagandists to try to convince us all that it’s safe – and WE are being made into the TEST SUBJECTS! HOW exactly has this been tested thus far??? Exactly. If you don’t want to be the test subject – be cautious about where you get your salmon. *(We’re already seeing the hidden issues plaguing the population due to GE crops. It’s only a matter of time before more of the same with the fish. ISH.)”

In summary:
I’d be poised to say, “to each their own”. That is to say – we all have a choice to make when it comes to what we’re willing to put into our bodies. But it’s still not even that simple…  We have to be our own advocates here – since they will NOT be forced to label these items. So if we want to be empowered with our God-given right to know and choose what we purchase and feed our families – we have to be careful about who we shop with. For example, Whole Foods & Trader Joe’s have both announced that they will not sell the GE salmon – which is a big relief to this family! Take back and maintain your power. Their power comes from our purchases. WE CAN take some of that power away from them – by simply purchasing trusted products instead. Benefits your family… Benefits all of society! We just need to stay informed, and make the best choices we can with what we do know. Are you part of the movement?

Speaking of family – this is what I want my own kids to know about things like this… Don’t give away your personal rights & power. I love knowing I’m GIVING MY KIDS A CHANCE!

I don’t know about you – but I do know I want NOTHING to do with being Big-Ag’s guinea pig. I simply don’t want to take that chance. I’ll stick to what nature intended, thanks very much.
To me – something just smells fishy about it all….

**UPDATE:

From the Institute for Responsible Technology:
Despite Risks FDA Sanctions Unlabeled Synthetic Salmon

LOS ANGELES, CA. – Because of the risk of allergies, hormonal disruption, novel proteins and other serious health issues for consumers, and the risk of irreversible damage to the ecosystem, the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) condemns the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval of AquaBounty Technologies Inc. fast growing, gene-altered salmon, transgenic salmon.

”Independent scientists worldwide have rejected the safety testing protocols used by AquaBounty and accepted by the FDA as superficial and reckless,” said Jeffrey Smith, Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology. “Furthermore, based on the aggressive and violent behavior of genetically engineered salmon in a Canadian study, the ocean’s delicate ecosystem is at risk.”

The Atlantic Salmon Federation has expressed grave concerns about how natural food supplies and fish ecosystems could be disrupted should these new, voracious super-sized salmon accidentally escape into the wild.

“Fortunately, as more and more Americans turn away from consuming genetically modified foods as a whole, the tipping point of consumer rejection will likely be achieved well before the salmon is released onto the market,” said Jeffrey Smith.

The tipping point, as exemplified in Europe in 1999, happened when the food companies realize that using GMO ingredients is costing them money because educated consumers refuse to buy them.
To accelerate the tipping point of consumer rejection, IRT asks consumers to re-double their commitment to eating non-GMO organic foods and spread the word about the health dangers of GMOs.

IRT further encourages supermarkets, restaurants, wholesalers and all aspects of the food industry to commit to not buying or selling these dangerous fish.

**MORE UPDATES, from the Center for Food Safety:

As you know, the FDA approved genetically engineered (GE) salmon last week1, and won’t require these fish to be labeled, leaving us in the dark about the foods we buy and eat. So our campaign to urge supermarkets, seafood companies, and restaurants to reject GE salmon is more important than ever, and we’re making tremendous progress, thanks to you!

After a year of pressure, Costco has committed to not sell GE salmon! Center for Food Safety, Friends of the Earth and a coalition of more than 30 consumer, health, food safety and fishing groups released the retailer’s statement2 today.

Costco, the second largest retailer in the world, with 487 stores, and one of the largest retailers of salmon and seafood in the U.S., joins more than 60 other supermarket chains including Kroger, Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Target, and Whole Foods, now totaling more than 9,500 stores nationwide, in making a commitment to not sell GE salmon.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, and Publix are among the last remaining large retail grocers in the U.S. that have not yet rejected GE salmon.

Also last Friday, Red Lobster, with 705 North American locations and more than 40 internationally, told the Dallas Morning News3 that it would not sell GE salmon.

The market is clearly rejecting GE salmon – stores won’t sell it and people don’t want to eat it. Now other retailers like Walmart and restaurants need to follow suit, and we need mandatory labeling so that consumers know how to avoid GE salmon.

Nearly two million people — including scientists, fishermen, business owners and consumers — who submitted comments to FDA opposed the approval of genetically engineered salmon due to the risks it poses to human health, the environment, and wild salmon populations.

We will be watching Costco closely and holding them accountable to their commitment. In the absence of labeling, CFS, Friends of the Earth, and the coalition will continue to push retailers to not sell this novel fish.

Thanks, as always, for everything you do to demand safe, sustainable food and the right to know. We couldn’t have pushed Costco this far without you!
